Introducing the Arc of Tomorrow update
We're thrilled to unveil our next major free update for Civ VII, which we're calling Arc of Tomorrow. Larger in scope than even the Test of Time update from May, this next overhaul brings another wave of significant new features and content to Civ VII, including a fourth, brand-new Age: the Atomic Age.

Expected to arrive in 2027, the Arc of Tomorrow update extends Civ VII's playable span of history from approximately the 1950s to the 2050s. Here's a more in-depth breakdown of the new content and gameplay systems included in this free update for all Civilization VII players:
- The Atomic Age dawns: Like the previous three Ages, the Atomic Age brings its own period-specific gameplay, as well as new Buildings, Units, visuals, and more.
- Expanded Nuclear gameplay: Arc of Tomorrow reimagines Civ's approach to nuclear strategy, with new offensive and defensive options and Units, plus a fun twist on mutually assured destruction.
- Multilateral Agreements: You and fellow leaders can collectively react to developing situations like a growing stockpile of nuclear warheads with calls for disarmament… or escalation.
- New empire management tools: The ability to transform your own Settlements into City-States offers finer control over your Settlement Limit and ensures you always have a path to engage with enhanced City-State abilities.
- Enhanced City-State interactions & Proxy Warfare: Manage global tensions without direct conflict by prompting City-States into Proxy Wars.
- Great Works of Film: Your Film Crews will hunt for the perfect shooting location that differs depending on desired genre, and gives variable benefits depending on the quality of Film produced.
- Manufactured Goods: These allow you to follow recipes that combine specific commodities to produce brand new, powerful resources like Enriched Uranium.
- New Leaders & civs: Stay tuned for more information in the future!
With the Arc of Tomorrow update, players will still be able to play from the Antiquity Age through the end of the game, or begin during whichever subsequent Age they choose—including the Atomic Age—with Advanced Start.
As with the Test of Time update, we're also inviting the community to put the Arc of Tomorrow content through its paces via the Firaxis Feature Workshop. We're planning to kick off our first round of playtesting for this update later this year. Check back for details on how to sign up! Community feedback remains vitally important to us and will continue to shape new content for Civ VII. We can't wait to hear what you think!
Reminder: all feature and gameplay details are subject to change while we iterate based on player feedback.
Civilization VII: Earthrise
While the Arc of Tomorrow updates bring Civilization VII into the present day and near future, the title's first full, paid expansion is themed around the historic space race and deploying missions across the solar system. We're calling it Civilization VII: Earthrise, and it's also expected to launch in 2027.

Prepare your empire for launch in Sid Meier's Civilization® VII: Earthrise. In this expansion for Civilization VII, your civ reaches for the stars as it adapts to a changing world.
Look to the Heavens
How will your civilization draw inspiration from the night sky? Guide your people from humble stargazers to pioneers of spaceflight. In the Antiquity and Exploration Ages, chart celestial bodies and turn cosmic insight into strategic advantage. As the Modern and Atomic Ages dawn, take humanity's first steps beyond the atmosphere: found a space agency, launch missions into the solar system, and survey nearby moons and planets. Each successful mission uncovers planetary features and untapped resources, fueling your civ’s growth back on Earth.
Adapt to Your Environment
Decide how your people will be shaped by the land, and how they'll shape it in return. New units and technologies let you alter the terrain and bonuses of tiles of your empire, opening fresh ways to manage your settlements. When natural disasters intensify with rising global temperatures, you'll have the tools to withstand them—or reverse the warming itself. And as your people master the tundra, desert, or tropics, your civilization will earn new gameplay advantages that enhance your abilities in these biomes.
More to Be Announced in the Coming Months!
Civilization VII: Earthrise includes additional gameplay systems, content updates, and new civs and leaders that will be announced in the future.

Update 1.5.0
Update 1.5.0 arrives later this month! It focuses on bringing a few quality-of-life updates to the game, including the long-requested True Start Location: Earth map.
Here’s a quick overview of what you can expect in 1.5.0:
- Earth map & True Start Location: Just as in Civilization VI, this new map generates the land, features, and resources of our real world, enabling a stronger roleplaying fantasy through history! You'll start your campaign in a map location representative of where your civ began according to Earth's actual geography.
- New Voronoi maps - Terra Incognita and Shuffle: As we've done in previous patches, we're updating two map types with our Voronoi map generation algorithm. This will help ensure these map types have greater variety and look more natural. Learn more here!
- Updates to resource generation: Map loading and generation is speedier, and resource placement should feel more varied.
- Updates to diplomacy: Use your influence to stay in an alliance without joining your ally’s misguided war.
- UI Updates: Additional updates to plot tooltips, Settlement banners, game setup, and a new tile ruler to help with city planning.
We’ll have more details on Update 1.5.0 to share very soon, and can’t wait to get it into your hands later this month! While we’ll continue to make a few targeted quality-of-life improvements after 1.5.0, we’re planning to be lighter in update cadence as the team shifts focus to some exciting, longer-term plans for Civilization VII.
When the update goes live later in September, be sure to check out our Game Update Notes page on the official Civ site for the full details.

FAQs
Arc of Tomorrow
Q: What is the Arc of Tomorrow update? What content will it add to Civilization VII?
Arc of Tomorrow is a massive, free update for Civilization VII players that introduces a new, fourth Age to the game: the Atomic Age. This update is tentatively scheduled to launch in the first half of 2027. Gameplay details are subject to change as we continue to develop and test features, but we envision the Arc of Tomorrow update to include the following content:
- Atomic Age: A new, fourth Age that extends the playable timeline of history from the 1950s through the 2050s.
- Modern world & visuals: Sweeping urban city architecture, updated tech and civic trees, new Triumphs, social policies, narrative events, and more.
- New civs & leaders: A new roster of period-specific civs, plus the return of the fan-favorite leader Gandhi!
- Expanded nuclear gameplay: Broader nuclear delivery and defensive options, multilateral agreements, and brand-new espionage actions provide ways to engage with nuclear gameplay like never before. Plus, we'll have a fun twist on mutually assured destruction by giving you a critical window to deploy defenses or fire back with a retaliatory strike whenever the big bombs begin to fly.
- Enhanced City-State gameplay & Proxy Warfare: Voluntarily release distant Settlements as brand-new City-States to finely tune the size and shape of your Empire, engage in a broader set of interactions with them, and even prompt them into Cold War-style proxy wars in order to steal away other City-States from your opponents in smaller-scale conflicts.
Q: Will I need to start a new game to experience the Atomic Age?
We recommend starting a fresh campaign. If you're in the middle of a game you want to finish, we will keep a legacy branch active so you can complete your current playthrough at your own pace.
Q: How does nuclear warfare work in the Atomic Age?
We're actively exploring these concepts right now, so exact details may evolve before launch. Atomic Age nuclear warfare will center on Mutually Assured Destruction and political tension. Our current planned features include a one-turn launch delay allowing for defensive reactions or counter-strikes, global disarmament diplomacy, espionage sabotage, and expanded nuclear Units.
P.S. Yes, there will be awesome new nuke animations.
For more details about the Arc of Tomorrow update, be sure to check out our recent PAX panel.
Q: What about City-State gameplay has been enhanced, and what’s Proxy Warfare?
We're actively exploring these concepts right now, so exact details may evolve before launch. By the Atomic Age, direct superpower wars carry massive risks. So we’ve been working on improving the capabilities of City-States and considering how Proxy Warfare might let you wage indirect, Cold War-style conflicts instead.
You’ll be able to recognize the independence of your Settlements and convert them to City-States, receive some powerful new bonuses, and engage in a few new actions that will help you regardless of what Victory path you’re pursuing. Plus, you can guide them as satellite states to do your bidding against rival empires, namely by engaging in smaller City-State Proxy Wars without triggering full blown empire-wide wars (though that’s always an option!). Supply Military Units directly to that smaller front, or even take direct control of the miniature conflict with a Joint Operation to ensure a decisive victory, and you’ll be able to steal an opponent’s City-State away – assuming they don’t do the same to you first! Independent Civilizations and Proxy Warfare introduce exciting new strategic gameplay, empowering you to carry out your agenda in the late game through high-stakes global influence.
Q. How does the addition of the Atomic Age impact the overall pacing and flow of the game?
Our goal in adding the Atomic Age is to give you richer, high-stakes choices in the late game, not to stretch out your turn counters. You’ll also have ways to control your playtime, with game speed settings and Advanced Starts, so you can skip earlier Ages entirely and even start right in the Atomic Age on turn one. Victory thresholds will also be adjusted to ensure a climactic finish in the Atomic Age!
Q: How will the Test of Time mechanics work in the new Atomic Age?
The Test of Time update introduced the option to play as any civ in any Age, so the Atomic Age is fully open to your civ of choice. We’re also debuting a lineup of new Atomic Age-specific civs, adding new synergistic options for your empire. Stay tuned for future reveals on which new civs are joining the roster with the Arc of Tomorrow update! Additionally, the Atomic Age will include its own set of Triumphs for you to complete and earn new gameplay bonuses.
Q: Will there be more updates to Civilization VII before Arc of Tomorrow launches?
Yes! However, updates will be slightly less frequent as we focus our team on the Arc of Tomorrow update and Earthrise expansion. We’re taking a similar approach to Test of Time, prioritizing quality and depth for major releases.
In the meantime, players can look forward to Update 1.5.0, launching later this month, which adds True Start Earth map, other new map types, and more.
Q: Will the Arc of Tomorrow update be playtested through the Firaxis Feature Workshop?
Yes, we will be opening up the Firaxis Feature Workshop later this year so players from the Civilization VII community can get their hands on the content and provide feedback as we continue through development! For more details, visit our Firaxis Feature Workshop page and sign up today!
Q: Are there other features or aspects of Civilization VII you plan to update in the future?
Beyond the new content coming with Arc of Tomorrow and the Earthrise expansion, our focus remains on polishing and improving the core Civilization VII experience. Player feedback since launch has given us endless inspiration, and we're eager to continue iterating on the game.
Earthrise
Q: What is Civilization VII: Earthrise and when does it release?
Earthrise is an upcoming paid expansion for Civilization VII centered around solar system exploration and environmental adaptability. Earthrise expands your empire's horizons - taking humanity from charting the stars in Antiquity to establishing a space agency in the Atomic Age that launches missions across the solar system. Back on Earth, it introduces new tools to manipulate terrain, boost tile yields, and build civil engineering projects to protect against natural disasters, alongside a new slate of civs and leaders.
We haven't announced an official release date just yet, but you can add Earthrise to your wishlist to get notified as soon as launch details drop.
Q: Do I need to buy the Earthrise expansion to play the new Atomic Age?
No! The Atomic Age is 100% free for all owners of the base game as part of the Arc of Tomorrow update. Earthrise is an optional paid expansion that adds extra features like solar-system exploration and environmental gameplay.
Q. Can I settle other planets in the Earthrise expansion?
No, Earthrise focuses on space exploration rather than off-world settlement. You’ll build a space agency to launch missions into the solar system, survey moons and planets, and bring powerful bonuses back to your empire on Earth. Alongside spaceflight, Earthrise also deepens environmental gameplay - letting you manipulate terrain, boost tiles, and build structures to better protect against natural disasters, which intensify with rising global temperatures.
More details will be announced at a later date!
Q. Is there extraterrestrial life in the Earthrise expansion?
Earthrise focuses strictly on human space exploration, orbital science, and real-world astrophysics. You’ll survey moons and planets, but you won't encounter alien civilizations.
Q: How much will the Earthrise expansion cost?
We’re not ready to share pricing details just yet. We will have full information on features, release date, and pricing closer to launch. Stay tuned to our official channels for updates.
Q: Are the Arc of Tomorrow and Earthrise releasing at the same time?
No, they will be released separately next year. Arc of Tomorrow and Earthrise have distinct release timelines so each can get the polish it deserves. We’ll be sharing individual launch dates and timeline details as we get closer.
Q. Will there be more DLCs and/or future expansion packs after this?
Our immediate priority is delivering on our current planned updates and bringing this expansion to life.
