Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth
Release date: October 2014
Set in the 23rd Century, Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth challenges players to find a new home for humanity following the collapse of modern society on Earth. On an expedition into deep space, players write the next chapter for humanity as they lead their people into the unknown and create a new civilization on an alien planet.
While exploring and shaping the face of a new world, players can research new technologies, amass mighty armies, develop flourishing cities and trade routes, unearth ancient alien relics, tame new forms of life, and build incredible Wonders. In a departure from other games in the Civilization series, players choose one of eight sponsors for their expedition rather than a civilization to play as. Furthermore, as their campaigns progress, players' actions contribute to the development of three Affinities: Harmony, Purity, and Supremacy.
Harmony
The Harmony Affinity is themed around a faction's integration with the alien planet. Players who decide to develop the Harmony line will transform their people through genetic manipulation to become one with the alien environment.
Purity Purity is focused on preserving, glorifying, and creating the ideal version of humanity as we know it now. If Harmony and Supremacy represent the changes humankind will face in the future, Purity is a total rejection of that adaptation.
Supremacy
Supremacy represents the most dramatic change for humanity. This Affinity sees technology as the thing that saved humanity after they were forced to leave Earth behind. Technology is what brought humanity to the new planet, so they decide to double down in cybernetics.
Advancing Affinities unlocks benefits and even Affinity-specific victory conditions such as returning to Earth via a Warp Gate to emancipate what remains of humanity there, and building and defending the Mind Flower Wonder to awaken and connect with the new planet's consciousness. Regardless of any Affinities, players can also win by establishing contact with aliens or by eliminating rival expeditions.
As players embark on this journey, they make critical decisions. From their choice of sponsor and the make-up of their colony, to the ultimate path they choose for their civilization, every decision opens up new possibilities.
Civilization: Beyond Earth's official expansion, Rising Tide, takes players to two new biomes on the planet's surface and invites them to explore beneath its seas. Four additional factions arrive from Earth, bringing with them new sponsor options, a reworked diplomacy system, new military units, and a plethora of buildings and Wonders to construct.
